Brief History of the Corps.
The
Hawthorne Caballeros Alumni Corps was organized in the fall of 1994 by a
group of twelve former Caballeros. The original music instructors were
Frank Pisillo and Jim D’Amico; Bob Peterson and Dan Raymond were the
percussion instructors—all four, Caballero veterans.
With a total membership of under sixty in 1995, the Corps
performed in several parades, stage shows, and on the field in a concert
formation. In 1996 a simple drill was instituted, and as the Corps grew,
by the following year a full drill was performed. The uniform the first
three years was a white golf shirt, black pants, and baseball cap. In
1998, however, the full uniform, identical to that of the competition
corps, was inaugurated.
Originally, the Corps was open only to former Caballeros. In the spring of
2000, however, the membership was opened to outside applicants with
certain qualifications (see Membership Info). There are
currently one-hundred and ten members. Due to the fact that they are the
only alumni corps that performs a complete drill reminiscent of those of
the ‘60s and ‘70s, the Hawthorne Caballeros Alumni Corps is very much in
demand.
Music rehearsals are generally held every other Sunday at American Legion
Post 199 in Hawthorne; drill practices are held at Dumont High School.
